Description

Standard Golf Company is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and was founded in 1910 by Walter Voorhees. Originally called Standard Manufacturing Company, it produced steel farm gates, ornamental gates and other diverse products including cistern covers, street signs, boat docks, wagon tongues and automatic hog waterers. In 1921 the city of Cedar Falls built its first nine hole golf course. At that time no company offered a complete standardized line of golf course accessories, so in 1925 Voorhees decided to add golf course equipment to Standard’s product line. “The idea struck me” he said, “that here was a field for an alert manufacturer. Why not develop a complete line of needs in this field? A standard line. Why not develop a product so good that it would be in demand all over the United States?”

Over the years golf course equipment became an increasingly important part of Standard’s business. Today, Standard Golf is the world’s leading manufacturer of golf course accessories, and its products are sold by over 250 distributors on six continents. In June of 1992, a fire destroyed the original buildings which housed the company since 1910. Shortly thereafter, the company began construction of a new 100,000 square foot building in the Cedar Falls Industrial Park which it occupies today. Walter Voorhees named his sons, Robert and Maynard as President and Vice President respectively, after his retirement in 1956. The company is currently owned by Robert’s son, Peter E. Voorhees, making him the third generation of Voorhees to actively manage the company.
