In March of 2014 Champion Turf Farms celebrated their 48th year of business in the golf course industry. Morris Brown founded the company as Coastal Turf Nurseries in March of 1966 and the original cultivars produced were Tifdwarf, Tifgreen, and Tifway.

The Brown family has played an instrumental role in the development of this industry from its earliest days. Grass from their farms has been planted on hundreds of courses in 16 states over the last 48 years. Many of the techniques commonly used in the industry today were developed years ago by Mr. Brown.

From the beginning until today Champion Turf Farms has always done things differently in that the principals in the company have always been the ones to go out into the field to install their turf. The perspective that comes from working out on hundreds of courses alongside hundreds of superintendents over a 46 year period gives the Browns a unique approach to the business because every job reflects on a reputation that has taken four decades to build as well as a family legacy.

In 1987 Brown began to develop an extensive grass collection in hopes of developing improved cultivars. The first grass to be developed from this collection was the Champion Dwarf Bermudagrass, which was the very first ultradwarf cultivar and has now been planted on well over 500 courses over the last decade. Brown has marketed four new bermudagrass cultivars since Champion and is currently working on the next generation of putting green cultivars.

Champion Turf Farms is unique in the industry in that they are the breeders, producers, and installers of their grasses. This unique position, combined with their decades of experience lead them to develop their own support network for their grass. Nobody else in the industry can claim to have a knowledgebase developed from 48 years of traveling the country planting and studying grass, and all of this experience is available to the superintendents who have their turf. In addition they have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on research as a part of developing the best management practices for their grasses. To help disseminate and update this knowledge, they continually revisit courses that they have planted every month of the year.

The thinking behind this approach was articulated by Morris Brown, “The only way that we can truly succeed is if the superintendents who have our grass are being successful. So we determined years ago to do whatever it takes to ensure their success with the belief that our success will inevitably follow. If we visit a course we planted many years ago and the client is not happy with the turf we planted for him, then we have not been successful.”

In 1976, while selling golf course maintenance equipment, Fred Semaan saw a need for providing timely service with golf course flags and accessories. His wife Gail, who owned a fabric store, began making golf course flags for Fred to sell in his travels across Texas.

And Gail’s Flags was born.

Since 1976, Fred and Gail, and now their daughters Candace and Cassandra, have continued the focus on providing quality products and service second-to-none. Over the years, the growth of Gail’s Flags, Inc. has brought flag silk-screening and embroidery processes in-house, as well as distribution of the top accessory and specialty golf course equipment companies in the world.

Derek Weaver and Ken Thompson founded the Golf-Lift® division of Derek Weaver Company, Inc. in 1991.

Ken is a veteran in the automotive service equipment field with over 40 years of experience. He is well known throughout the lift industry for his ability to critique the operational functions of lifting equipment and their productive applications for the operator. Among his most significant work includes the introduction of the asymmetric 2-column above ground lift to the United States while President of the Group 10 Import Company. The asymmetric quickly became the productivity standard here in the U.S.A. and is now the #1 seller of all automotive lift manufacturers.

Ken also influenced the beginning of another top seller when he encouraged the design of the 4-column wheel alignment lift to enable alignment service for the longer wheel base pick-up trucks along with 4-wheel alignment capability for cars. This innovation along with 4-wheel adjustable suspensions literally put an end to the wheel alignment pits in the early 80's.

Derek has over 33 years of experience in the automotive service equipment field and 17 years in the turf equipment field. His automotive background includes certifications in both sales and service of computer wheel alignment systems, computer wheel balancing, brake lathes, tire changers, refrigerant management & recycling stations and all lifting equipment above and below ground. His turf equipment background began with the creation of the turf specific Golf-Lift line.

It was Ken who first discovered the need of a lifting system for the turf industry and asked Derek to assist in the investigation. At the time there were only 2 production lifts available to the turf industry for the servicing of turf equipment. Neither unit was designed to perform at a level suitable to their standards. The lifts would only raise a few feet off the floor, had low capacities and many obstacles for the technician to work around. One company even offered a stool to get down on because of the short lifting height. These lifts simply did not come close to providing full coverage of all turf equipment and forced the technician to stay on the ground.

After thorough investigation and with the input of some local superintendents (special thanks to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth and past Superintendent Tom Werner) they both realized that they could offer so much more without increasing the cost. It was at a visit to the GCSAA show in New Orleans (1991) that a decision was made to start the Golf-Lift line. With a cocktail napkin and a few preliminary drawings the first Full-Rise (72" lifting height) Golf-Lift was born.

Many standards have been set by Golf-Lift with others only following. The GL-6 was "The First" production lift to offer total turf equipment coverage with 6,000-lbs of capacity and 6 feet of lifting height. Next came the GL-12 with 12,000-lbs. of capacity and the ability to handle all turf equipment plus trucks up to 172" wheelbase. Now the patented and certified GL-9 with the Tire-Wedge turf arm system is the flagship of the Golf-Lift line (special thanks to Preston Trail Golf Club in Dallas, Superintendent Alan Houdek, Chuck and Gab for their assistance). The GL-9 takes up the least amount of space and provides the most open access to the equipment of any turf equipment lift. The flexibility of the GL-9 remains unmatched with extended capability of handling trucks and utility vehicles by the frame for wheels-free service.

The GL-9's patented design is a great example of the tradition and philosophies shared by Derek and Ken. It is with great respect for the technician and his maximum productivity and performance that gives us the Golf-Lift line.

Micro-Blaze® Microbial Products contain a proprietary blend of wetting agents, nutrients, and several strains of safe, non-pathogenic Bacillus bacteria. Quality Turf Farms specializes in grasses developed for the varied and diverse weather conditions of Texas. We are located south of Houston in West Columbia, Texas. From Houston take 288 South exit Hwy 35 south towards Bay City. We are located right over the San Bernard river outside of West Columbia.

Superior Silica Sands LLC is part of Emerge Energy Services; a $1 billion publicly traded, Master Limited Partnership, traded on the NYSE under the ticker symbol EMES, owned by Insight Equity, a private equity firm based in Southlake, Texas that owns a portfolio of companies with approximately $1 billion of capital currently under management. Our operations include “best in class” mines and production facilities in Clinton, New Auburn, and Arland Wisconsin as well as Kosse, Texas.

Our state-of-the-art facility in Clinton is located directly on the Canadian National Railroad for ease of transportation to markets to the East and West. With private track that holds 450 cars, and a throughput capacity of 2.4 mm tpy of high-quality Northern white sand, this facility allows for high-volume unit train or manifest shipments to the customers’ specific locations. Our all-weather, enclosed facility, fed by three high-output mines, offers assurance in feed and on-time shipments, regardless of weather conditions, by our experienced quality assurance and operations teams.

Our New Auburn plant is conveniently located directly on the Progressive Rail Short Line that connects to the Union Pacific Railroad, giving us full control of coordinating, loading and shipping railcars to any destination in the U.S., particularly to the South. We have four 4,000-foot storage tracks on our property with the ability to hold up to 425 railcars, optimizing car availability for our customers’ order fulfillment. Like the Clinton facility, the plant is a fully enclosed, all-weather facility, which enables Superior Silica Sands to produce frac sand at full capacity in the worst of winter weather.

Our newest, state-of-the-art, all-weather facility in Arland is a close replica of our Clinton, WI facility, with 10 Rotex screens for simultaneous production of all five grades of Superior quality Northern white sand. Similarly the Arland facility has 4 – 2,000 ton silos for 20/40, 30/50, 40/70 & 100M and a 500 ton silo for 16/30. One of the notable upgrades is the 400 tph rotary dryer which allows this facility the production capacity of 2.5MM TPY finished frac sand throughput, making it slightly larger than our Clinton facility. The second, more notable advantage of Arland is, unlike our other Wisconsin facilities, this plant is not located directly on a rail line, however is a truck to rail design which allows SSS the ability to utilize the Arland plant as a “swing plant” to subsidize our existing locations’ tonnages to the preferred Class 1 Railroad, or as customers’ orders dictate.

The uniqueness of the whiteness of our Texas and Wisconsin sands provide superior brightness and consistency for color-sensitive applications. The roundness of our Wisconsin sands and the sub-angularity of our Texas sands allows us to customize products for a diversity of markets. Product consistency, quality, and reliability of supply give us a considerable competitive advantage in the markets we serve – and that means direct benefits for our customers.

In 1957, Dow Huggett started his sod farm with a roll top desk & 30 acres. His farm was planted with mint prior to 1957.

At that time, Huggett Sod Farm, only had one type of sod, and this was harvested with a “Ryan” walk behind sod cutter. Dow & his crew of 6 (including his son Wallace) rolled the sod pieces, loaded the sod & also unloaded the sod, all by hand!

Utilizing a small stake truck, deliveries were made within a 100-mile radius of the farm located in Marlette, Michigan.

In 1961, Wallace Huggett took over the daily operations of the sod farm. Over the next 40 years, he expanded the farm to include (800 - 1000) acres and added a tree nursery on an additional 120 acres. The business was incorporated in 1966.

In 1982, Wallace Huggett extended his sod business to Texas. He opened Trinity Turf Nursery, in Pilot Point, Texas. Trinity Turf Nursery has approximately 800 acres in sod production of Bermuda Grass and Zoysia Grass. It has become an acknowledged quality leader in the Dallas/Fort Worth sod market.

For over 30 years, ZEO, Inc. has been researching, developing, and marketing ZEO branded and private label products that are sold domestically and internationally. Through direct sales, distributors, and agents, these products move into retail and wholesale markets. While a wide range of industries are served, sales are concentrated in the agriculture and filtration industries.

These products are well established and respected in their respective markets and are ZEO’s trade names registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

A broad range of private label products are produced to meet the individual needs of small to large companies. From packaging design through shipping to the customer, ZEO has the capability to turnkey private label products with small and large volumes. Typical private label shipments are truckload quantities with minimum quantities of several pallets per shipment.

All ZEO products have FDA GRAS status and are based upon natural zeolites and powdered cellulose fiber. In addition to being organic and eco friendly, some of the products are certified to specific industry standards. For example, EcoSand and ZAR-MIN are certified organic through OMRI and ZeoFiber and ZeoSand are certified to several NSF Standards through Water Quality Association.

Each natural zeolite deposit is different and has specific characteristic that are required for specific applications. ZEO’s extensive research matches the properties of the natural zeolite deposit with the end use. For example, the EcoSand natural zeolite is excellent as soil amendment, but the green color would be a detriment as a paint filler.
